A policy guideline that includes living guidelines for the responsible use of generative AI in science and society.

What is it?

A policy guideline that includes living guidelines for the responsible use of generative AI in science and society. This work resulted from two international summits with representatives of representatives of the Centre for Trustworthy Technology (World Economic Forum), the European Commission, the OECD, UNESCO, the International Science Council, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the international network of University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS), organised at the UvA Institute for Advanced Study. The living guidelines have been published in Nature and subsequently been largely adopted by the European Commission. The first summit took place in 2023: Summit on Responsible Use of LLMs in Research. A next summit will be planned in 2027 to update and extend the living guidelines.

What makes it interesting for this RPA?

This is an example of how policy-making can function as an interface between science and society, and vice versa. The development of living guidelines brings together scientific expertise, policymakers, NGOs and citizens, creating a space for dialogue and mutual learning around the responsible use of generative AI. The guidelines have also informed European policy, illustrating how knowledge and perspectives developed through these interactions can feed into broader policy processes.
