Today's major challenges, such as climate change, environmental degradation, misinformation, irresponsible use of AI or a potential pandemic, make it clear that changes in policies and behaviour cannot take place without a strong link between knowledge and people.

There is a need to broaden the range of interactions between the sciences and the public in all its varieties as evidenced by the challenges posed by the Sustainable Development Goalsthe increasing focus of the International Science Council and UNESCO on strengthening science in society and intensifying citizen science, and as highlighted in research agendas such as those outlined by the ERCand NWO

Citizen science projects are already taking place around the world, but scientific research is in a dynamic tension between engaging with, and meeting the expectations of, society. Conversely, scientific research must take into account the diversity of public spheres and public issues. Although trust in science is generally high,he diversity of publics, i.e. the different configurations of individuals and groups related to different issues, such as climate change, mental health and access to knowledge and information, and the different consequences these issues have for different people, requires a more sophisticated and radical approach to strengthening the place of science in society and combining scientific citizenship with advances in science.

The research priority area Shaping interfaces between science and the public will enhance the interrelationship between science and diverse societal groups by developing and refining methodologies and shaping interfaces that are critical for future challenges. This sustainable connection will be fostered by establishing the UvA Public Methodology Centre, linking diverse and often under-represented publics with the methodological advancement of science.
