The RPA Shaping Interfaces Between Science and the Public will advance the relation between science and the diverse publics in society by developing and refining methodologies and shaping interfaces that are crucial for facing current challenges.

By bridging the gap between researchers, professionals and various publics, the RPA will establish a unique, high-quality and highly novel, long-term and sustainable connection between methodological research and public and professional practices.

The innovative contribution of the RPA is based on an in-depth link between the research objectives, the methodology and the development of the interfaces:

  1. Analysing and monitoring the diversity of publics and public issues related to science: The RPA will arrive at new forms to analyse the relation between the sciences and publics in all their varieties, by developing new tools to fuel this interaction and to monitor the emergence of public and societal issuesand the people involved in them.
  2. Advancing Methodologies: The RPA will not only strengthen collaboration across different areas and methodologies, but also lead to the development of more comprehensive approaches in those four areas that allow diverse disciplines to combine their strength to address complex challenges.
  3. Developing interfaces: The RPA will stimulate the development of scientific methodologies and interfaces, broadly defined, not just apps but also dialogs, models, visualisations and concepts that bridge the gap between research, policy, professionals, and the public, in four key areas where the UvA has a strong research position.

International collaboration

The RPA is scientifically grounded in state-of-the-art expertise on science in society, scientific citizenship and science-public interface development. It aspires to be a pioneer in its field with an international reach. It will encourage international collaborations and active participation in prominent conferences and panels. This will facilitate contributions to scholarly discussions on the societal role of the university, science as a social good, and the principles of open science. The project has the potential to make a significant contribution both to the development and unification of methodologies, and to the discourse on the evolving role of science in society.
